Turtles in Schools: Hands-On Conservation & STEM Learning

 The Turtles in Schools program brings real-world conservation science into the classroom, giving students the opportunity to study, protect, and even raise freshwater turtles. 


Through an award-winning citizen science framework, schools can participate in turtle nest monitoring, habitat restoration, and hands-on conservation activities - all while aligning with the Australian Science Curriculum.

1️⃣ Entry Level Package (Citizen Science Starter)


🔹 Turtles in Schools Curriculum – Introductory lessons in turtle conservation and wetland ecology.
🔹 TurtleSAT & Citizen Science Training – Students report turtle sightings and nesting data.
🔹 Classroom Activities – Basic water quality testing and conservation discussions.
🔹 No Turtle Island – Schools don't participate in monitoring unless a council has installed one.

2️⃣ Conservation Leader Package (Hands-On Conservation & Hatchling Release)


🔹 Turtles in Schools Curriculum – In-depth engagement with STEM-based conservation.
🔹 Turtle Island Access – Eggs are harvested from a Biohaven Island, incubated at the school, and hatchlings are released back into the wetland.

3️⃣ Headstarter Package (Hatchling Care & Long-Term Conservation Impact)

🔹 Hatchling Rearing Program – Schools raise hatchlings for 9 months, releasing them at a larger size for higher survival rates.
🔹 Connected School Partnership – Partner with a Conservation Leader school, learning advanced turtle conservation methods.
🔹 Advanced Research & Monitoring – Students conduct eDNA testing, GIS mapping, and fox monitoring.
