Turtles in Schools:
Empowering the Next Generation of Conservationists
The Turtles in Schools program brings real-world conservation science into the classroom, giving students the opportunity to study, protect, and even raise freshwater turtles.
Through an award-winning citizen science framework, schools can participate in turtle nest monitoring, habitat restoration, and hands-on conservation activities - all while aligning with the Australian Science Curriculum.
✅ Hands-on Conservation – Students monitor nests, incubate eggs, and raise hatchlings.
✅ STEM & Citizen Science – Curriculum integrates GIS mapping, eDNA testing, and biodiversity monitoring.
✅ Community & Council Engagement – Schools partner with local councils, landowners, and conservation leaders.
✅ Turtle Island Nesting – Schools involved in higher levels can harvest eggs from floating Turtle Islands, protecting nests from predators.
✅ Award-Winning Innovation – Backed by the Eureka Prize-winning 1 Million Turtles team, ensuring high-quality education and measurable conservation outcomes.
🔹 Turtles in Schools Curriculum – Introductory lessons in turtle conservation and wetland ecology.
🔹 TurtleSAT & Citizen Science Training – Students report turtle sightings and nesting data.
🔹 Classroom Activities – Basic water quality testing and conservation discussions.
🔹 No Turtle Island – Schools don't participate in monitoring unless a council has installed one.
🔹 Includes an EcoTurtle Basking Island Kit
🔹 Turtles in Schools Curriculum – In-depth engagement with STEM-based conservation.
🔹 Turtle Island Access – Eggs are harvested from a Biohaven Island, incubated at the school, and hatchlings are released back into the wetland.
🔹 Field Excursions & Community Engagement – Partner with local councils, landowners, and conservation programs.
🔹 eDNA & Water Testing Kits – Students participate in cutting-edge biodiversity monitoring.
🔹 Full Citizen Science & Curriculum Package – Biohaven Island, hatchling incubation, and full ecosystem monitoring.
🔹 Hatchling Rearing Program – Schools raise hatchlings for 9 months, releasing them at a larger size for higher survival rates.
🔹 Connected School Partnership – Partner with a Conservation Leader school, learning advanced turtle conservation methods.
🔹 Advanced Research & Monitoring – Students conduct eDNA testing, GIS mapping, and fox monitoring.
✅ Engaging, Science-Based Curriculum – Aligned with Years 5 & 6 science outcomes.
✅ Teacher Support & Training – Resources and guidance from conservation experts.
✅ Hands-On Wetland Conservation – Students contribute to real-world citizen science projects.
Whether your school is starting small or becoming a leader in conservation, Turtles in Schools has a package to fit your goals.
