1 Million Turtles Community Conservation Program
In Term 3, students will learn about water quality parameters and macroinvertebrates, and how both can be used to assess wetland health. Students will learn about eDNA and how it can be used to detect species in the water. Students will conduct their own water quality testing, macroinvertebrate sampling and eDNA sampling at their local wetland and analyse their findings.

DownloadIn Term 1, students will learn about wetland habitats and their threats. Students will research flora and fauna and collect data on the distribution of flora at their local wetland. Students will learn about freshwater turtles, their morphology and the cultural significance of them to First Nations People.
In Term 2, students will learn about the threats to freshwater turtles and create a conservation action plan for species. Students will develop their skills as citizen scientists and will implement the experimental design for the National Nest Predation Survey.
In Term 4, students will learn about freshwater turtle nesting and will apply their skills as a citizen scientist to instigate social change that supports freshwater turtle conservation. Students will facilitate their own “Turtle Patrols” and implement turtle nest protection during November (Turtle Month).
